Dressing the Man: Mastering the Art of Permanent Fashion
Dressing the Man: Mastering the Art of Permanent Fashion
by Alan Flusser

From Publishers Weekly
During the past 25 years, men have spent more money on clothing for themselves than in any other period of modern history, says Alan Flusser (Style and the Man). The time has "never been more propitious for the emergence of a standing army of well-heeled swells," he believes, and in Dressing the Man: Mastering the Art of Permanent Fashion, he takes readers on a tour of men's clothing that he attests will never go out of style. Flusser carefully explains how to mix patterns, what to look for when trying on clothes in the fitting room, what kind of jacket to wear with a straight-point collar, the history of the monk-strap shoe, the correct position for a bow tie and what "business casual" really means. Heavily illustrated with photographs of dapper dans from Humphrey Bogart to the Duke of Windsor and drawings depicting neckwear, suit jackets, coat sleeves and trouser creases, this is a superb reference for any man. top of page

Description:

Dressing the Man is the definitive guide to what men need to know in order to dress well and look stylish without becoming fashion victims. top of page

Alan Flusser's name is synonymous with taste and style. With his new book, he combines his encyclopedic knowledge of men's clothes with his signature wit and elegance to address the fundamental paradox of modern men's fashion: Why, after men today have spent more money on clothes than in any other period of history, are there fewer well-dressed men than at any time ever before? top of page

According to Flusser, dressing well is not all that difficult, the real challenge lies in being able to acquire the right personalized instruction. Dressing well pivots on two pillars -- proportion and color. Flusser believes that "Permanent Fashionability," both his promise and goal for the reader, starts by being accountable to a personal set of physical trademarks and not to any kind of random, seasonally served-up collection of fashion flashes. top of page

Unlike fashion, which is obliged to change each season, the face's shape, the neck's height, the shoulder's width, the arm's length, the torso's structure, and the foot's size remain fairly constant over time. Once a man learns how to adapt the fundamentals of permanent fashion to his physique and complexion, he's halfway home. top of page

Taking the reader through each major clothing classification step-by-step, this user-friendly guide helps you apply your own specifics to a series of dressing options, from business casual and formalwear to pattern-on-pattern coordination, or how to choose the most flattering clothing silhouette for your body type and shirt collar for your face. top of page

A man's physical traits represent his individual road map, and the quickest route toward forging an enduring style of dress is through exposure to the legendary practitioners of this rare masculine art. Flusser has assembled the largest andmost diverse collection of stylishly mantled men ever found in one book. Many never-before-seen vintage photographs from the era of Cary Grant, Tyrone Power, and Fred Astaire are employed to help illustrate the range and diversity of authentic men's fashion. Dressing the Man's sheer magnitude of options will enable the reader to expand both the grammar and verbiage of his permanent-fashion vocabulary. top of page

For those men hoping to find sartorial fulfillment somewhere down the road, tethering their journey to the mind-set of permanent fashion will deliver them earlier rather than later in life.

The Indispensable Guide to Classic Men's Clothing

The Indispensable Guide to Classic Men's Clothing
by Christopher Sulavik, Josh Karlen, Amy Libra

From Library Journal
Few "indispensable" guides are ever just that, but this title comes close to hitting the mark, even though much of the information provided can be found in similar guides, such as Paul Keers's A Gentleman's Wardrobe (1988). Karlen, an attorney and editor, and Sulavik, a journalist, use a question-and-answer format (e.g., "Should a dress shirt have a pocket?") that works well, and the candid remarks provided by dozens of clothing experts are an interesting feature. Helpful line drawings are interspersed throughout the text, although photographs might have provided clearer illustrations in some instances. While this is not quite an indispensable purchase, most public and academic libraries should have at least a few good men's grooming guides like this one on their shelves.AP. Description:
The Indispensable Guide to Classic Men's Clothing answers hundreds of questions on every article in a man's wardrobe, from ascots to wing-tips. It explains, in practical language and through over 60 illustrations, the rules of attire that every man should know for all occasions, from Black Tie to Casual Fridays. The Indispensable Guide to Classic Men's Clothing addresses vexing questions such as:

Which classic suits belong in every man's closet?
What's the proper way to tie a Windsor knot?
What are the classic neck tie patterns?
What kind of shirt collar is best for me?
When should I wear cuff links?
What's the most versatile overcoat?
What's the most traditional style of tuxedo?
Which shoe is dressier, a balmoral or blucher?
What's the history of the navy blue blazer?

In the last few years, there has been a resurgence of classicly-styled men's clothing... Brooks Brothers has seen boosted sales in its classic, made-to-measure suits... Cuff links have made a comeback....Spectator shoes are being worn by Swing dance enthusiasts.

In their book, The Indispensable Guide to Classic Men's Clothing, journalists Josh Karlen and Christopher Sulavik, describe classic styles of men's clothing which have endured fashion cycles and are now as popular as ever. They interviewed dozens of the leading experts on men's clothing from American clothiers-such as Brooks Brothers and Paul Stuart, to Britain's famed Turnbull & Asser and France's shoemaker J.M. Weston. The result is an exhaustive, yet concise volume which offers these experts' advice on how to put together a wardrobe of timeless, impeccable style and tips on how to recognize quality clothing. Plus, the finest custom shoemakers, suitmakers and shirtmakers and others describe the fine points of their craft.

Description:
The Modern Gentleman A Guide to Essential Manners, Savvy & Vice by Phineas Mollod and Jason Tesauro "A man may possess expensive duds, slick wheels, and a tongue to match, but these are not the prerequisites of a gentleman. A gentleman is defined by how he carries himself in fairways and stormy climes. A student of the classics and a pilot of the new, he recommends sizzling reads, pays his gambling debts, mans the grill, and curbs his dog. Reserved, flamboyant, or likely somewhere in between, a gentleman’s charisma is cultivated, not canned. He fosters an infectious comfort in others as they quietly marvel at his manner and his hats, from the erudite bowler to the plucky fedora. Little charms performed thoughtfully ensure that inevitable faux pas are measured against a graceful reputation. He can be trusted with his word and your wife." top of page

So begins THE MODERN GENTLEMAN, a visually stimulating, rib-tickling, thought-provoking sourcebook of manners and mischief for the 21st-century male. The book offers a panoramic snapshot of the gentleman: witty and poignant, traditional but spontaneous, flirtatious yet courting. Discussions range from the classic (Motoring, Oenophilia) and serious (Secrets & Lies, The Good Husband), to the racy (Kink & Fetish, To the Power of 3) and silly (Bumper Stickers, Fonzarelli Moves & Legerdemain ). And since it is inevitable that a gentleman will dabble in the friskier areas of excess, trouble, and chance, the book’s naughty nucleus, "The Potent Gentleman," explores leisure and dalliance, from alcohol and snuff to recreational botanicals and sex. top of page

All men aspire to be perpetually dapper, fluent in three languages, and hit 300-yard drives off the blue tees, not to mention quote poetry by the stanza and win a back-alley scrap. However, there is a dashing plateau more desirable than Hollywood perfection, a level of gallantry that makes one stand out, even in the elevator. So knot up your ascot, pour a glass of sherry, and crack open the MODERN GENTLEMAN: your Man Cycle is peaking.
